Fawkes dropped something at Harry's feet.

"The Sorting Hat?" Tom said and laughed. "Dumbledore must be mad."

"Dumbledore knows what he's about." Harry picked up the hat. He
wasn't sure how it could help, but he was getting a little
desperate. He put it on.

There was a small voice inside his head. "Hmm...what? Oh, right.
Right. Let's see now."

Tom just watched, a smirk on his face.

"Ah, yes," the voice said. "I know just the thing."

Harry took a deep breath, and got ready.

The hat yelled, "Slytherin!"

Tom called the basilisk. Harry ran. He wasn't fast enough.
