flinty determination in his face. A real man shoots his own dog.

The slam knocked him over before he heard the blast. The blood
welled out of him before he felt the pain.

The old man walked out. Coward. Couldn't stand to stay and watch
his own son die. What goes around, comes around, Dad. Watch your
back.

Jeff lay on the rug, waiting. Remembering that last case. His
retort to his partner.

"Come on, Diana. There's no such thing as vampires."

His strength began to return.
