Tom studied harder than anyone and he studied alone.

First day of OWLs was the Transfiguration practical.

"Tom Riddle?" the examiner asked, head bent over his papers.

"Yes," Tom said.

"Would you please change this hedgehog into a silver tea set?"

"No," Tom said.

The examiner gasped and looked at Tom. "I beg your pardon, Mr
Riddle."

Tom looked back, unblinking, and concentrated. He whispered a few
words.

The examiner's eyes slowly unfocused. "Very good," he said in a
dazed voice. "Full marks."

Tom smiled. He would have made full marks anyhow, but this way was
so much more fun.
