FUSS AND BOTHER

"I'm just older," Ryoma says. "It's no big deal."

"No," Tezuka says and Ryoma doesn't know if he is agreeing or
disagreeing. There's a package in Tezuka's hands, but he doesn't
hold it out to Ryoma.

"You don't need to make a fuss." The box is wrapped in gold paper.
It looks heavy.

"You accepted those cookies at school today."

"I was hungry."

Tezuka's face doesn't change, but Ryoma can sense his smile. "I
see," he says and bends down to Ryoma.

His mouth is warm and gentle and it makes Ryoma warm too, like he's
waking from a nap in the mid-day sun. Their lips cling for a
moment, then Tezuka moves away.

Ryoma lets go of Tezuka's sleeve and scowls up at him. "Can I have
my present now?"
