Categories: Lord of the Rings, Slash

Rating: PG13.

Fandom/Spoilers: Lord of the Rings. Movies and books.

Summary: Merry/Pippin. Under the mallorn tree.

Disclaimer: Tolkien, not me.

It was dark and there was flame and there was screaming. Merry tried to run away, but he tripped and fell dizzily down into the never-ending black. Nothing he could catch hold of, nothing he could do. He fell and fell and then he hit the ground and opened his eyes.

Safe in Lorien. No fear, no fire, no foes. Just the beating of his heart and the breathing of his sleeping friends.

Rolling over, Merry tried to calm himself. A cricket chirped nearby and the night air was sweet. He threw an arm around Pippin and went back to sleep, only Pippin wasn't there.

Merry sat up. The ground beside him was empty and Pippin's blanket was gone. Rubbing his eyes, Merry got up and went to look around.

The night was dark, but lamps burned in the treetops. Far away, he could hear the elves still singing. Merry wandered through the clearing, around the huge tree, and found Pippin wrapped in his blanket, sitting with his back against the trunk.

Merry sat down beside him and put his arm around Pippin's shoulders. For a while they did not speak. Pippin looked out into the wood. Then Merry pulled him closer. "Pippin?"

Pippin shook his head.

"What is it?"

No answer.

"Why aren't you sleeping? Were you lying on a tree root?"

Still no answer, but Merry felt Pippin tense beneath his arm.

"Are you hungry?"

And Pippin began to cry.

Merry had never seen Pippin cry before that day, not even when he was fourteen and fell from a tree and broke his arm. He had bitten his lip and made a joke of it instead.

Merry rubbed Pippin's back, trying to soothe him, remembering his own dream. "It's all right, Pip. We're safe now."

Pippin stared straight ahead, tears rolling down his face. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry."

"I'm sorry, it's my fault." Pippin dragged his knuckles across his eyes and down his cheeks.

Merry didn't know what to say. The streaks on Pippin's face gleamed softly in the faint light.

"I didn't mean to do it."

"I know you didn't. Everyone knows that."

"It was an accident. I'm sorry."

"I know you are." Merry sighed, stroked Pippin's hair, and wished he were wiser or braver or older. "Shh, it's all right."

"And I'm sorry I threw rocks in the water and I'm sorry I came along at all." Pippin covered his face with his hands. "I'm sorry I gave Frodo's name in Bree and stole all those vegetables from Farmer Maggot."

"And that I ran away from home that time and and that I took Mayor Whitfoot's beer." Pippin turned to Merry. "I'm sorry I ate your birthday cake when you were seventeen."

"And that you got the measles last year and that you cried when you were a baby?"

Pippin smiled briefly, then turned away. "Merry, what will I do?"

"You'll just have to bear it, Pip. It will get easier day by day." Merry handed Pippin his handkerchief.

"It doesn't feel like it." Pippin blew his nose and wiped his face. "Thanks. I lost mine last week."

Merry chuckled. "What are elves' handkerchiefs like, do you think?"

"Thin as spider web, strong as steel, soft as down, no doubt."

"Woven on the looms of old, of which the stories tell." Merry grinned at Pippin and they both began to giggle.

"They'll hold a lake of tears and still be dry."

"And glow to light your way on nights when there's no moon."

"And above all, they are never, ever misplaced." Pippin tucked Merry's handkerchief away in his own pocket.

Merry looked at Pippin and laughed and leaned over to kiss his forehead. But Pippin raised his face and took his friend in his arms. Merry put a hand on Pippin's cheek and an arm around his waist and they sat for a long while, kissing in the night while the elves and crickets sang.

But when Pippin began to tug at Merry's shirt, Merry pulled back. "What about the others?"

"The others are asleep." Pippin didn't stop.

"And the elves?"

"Elves are old and bloodless, Merry. If they're roused, it will be good for them." Pippin smiled. "And good for you."

"And you too, I suppose," said Merry. And he yielded, as he knew he would.

So they spread the blanket on the soft grass and lay down together and whether anyone saw them, they neither knew nor cared.

Afterwards, they dressed and sat a while longer under the mallorn tree, Pippin leaning on Merry's chest.

"Are you all right?"

"Well...better, anyhow. I'm not sorry about Will Whitfoot's beer anymore."

Merry ruffled Pippin's hair. "Then let's go to bed. With any luck, we can lie in tomorrow."

Quietly, they made their way back and settled under their blankets. Merry began to drift off.

"Merry," Pippin whispered.

"Go to sleep, Pip."

"What is it?"

"Now I'm hungry."

I love your fics, they're all a great read.
I just wanted to tell you that.

Marie @ March 26, 2003

*grumble grumble*
how many times to i have to say merry and pippin are NOT GAY!!!

zwxecrvbnm @ August 07, 2003

They ARE gay in this story,so shut up zxnxghsh...whatever your name is

@ November 24, 2003

merry n pippin rnt gay so how bout we not make gay fan fics

so n so @ December 12, 2003

this is a really good story. i like Pippin's repentance kind of thing and the bit about Elven Handkerchiefs.

and to the naysayers...why do they even comment? *swats*

Badger @ December 20, 2003

OK, the whole thing about Merry and Pippin being gay is not even worth discussing. What their sexual preference is not an issue, the thing that matters is that they can express their love for EACH OTHER, not just men, is a beautiful thing. I know they both got married to women eventually, but did you EVER even POSSIBLY stop to think that maybe they are bisexual? Or maybe, and this is MY theory, is that hobbits are VERY different from humans, and they ARE. Their views of what is homosexual and heterosexual could be very different, or perhaps, the two words "homo..." and "hetero..." don't even exist in the hobbit world. Perhaps they don't feel the need to put labels on their love. Hobbits are noble creatures you know, and we could learn a LOT from them.

But that's just me, of course.

P.S.--I liked the fanfic, I always think it's cute to see Merry and Pippin together; they're such lovable little scamps...hee hee.

Lexi @ December 25, 2003

Great story, loved that last line. And in addition to Lexi's comment, there's a label that says 'slash' at the top for a reason. If you don't like it, DON'T READ IT! Simple concept, eh?

Meg @ December 27, 2003

Wow, how odd there's another Lexi out there! Heh, my names lexi too ^_^ Anyways, flamers are just in denile because they took the time to read it knowing that it was slash which they dislike then they reveiwed it >.> Well I loved it, all the marry and pippin ones are so cute! Really well done without to much discriptive action ^_^

Lexi @ January 21, 2004

cejb01 @ January 25, 2004

okay I have had enough of whoever had been saying 'they're not gay' all through the site. It is so annoying. We like slash. You don't, so don't read it. Get off the site and stopp whinning!

Review: I love all your stories! This one was the best of them all! Keep it up!

Alexis @ January 28, 2004

Oh my goodness, I'm so glad I got lost on my way to somewhere else on the 'net and found this site! Your stories are exactly what I've been looking for =) Thank you!

daisy @ February 16, 2004

i totally agree with lexi.

Jess @ March 26, 2004

Why does everyone think that Merry and Pippen are gay! All they are, are friends. So step off. Merry in Pippin are cool. Expectilly Pippin, but that another story. The point is.. PIPPIN AND MERRY ARE NOT GAY. O.K I'm done.

galiwen @ April 03, 2004

I don't know what is wrong with you people, if you don't *like* the concept of Merry and Pippin being gay, why are you reading something marked SLASH? Do you think it's just put there for shits and giggles? It means something. Anyway, if you disliked it so much, why did you bother commenting on it, it's not like the author gives two shits what you think...unless of course it is positive. At any rate, I loved it. Particularly the hankerchief part, I love M/P, and if you write any more feel free to send them to me!

Elle @ April 08, 2004

I just wanted to say that I love your stories, especially your Merry/Pippin slash. (That's right kiddies, slash. Maybe some of us should pay more attention to the labels put at the beginning of stories, hm? Perhaps Merry and Pippin aren't really gay, but in this story they are. And you need to deal with that or stop reading. Please.) I need to get lost on the 'net more often. Keep it up.

Steph @ April 21, 2004

and being gay makes Pippin and Merry NOT cool? Because I thought who you were didn't have to have everything to do with who you shag. Grow up and if you don't like it, don't read it.

Peregrin @ May 07, 2004

Okay you people that come on this site and read these stories and critize this persons writing because the veiws in this story are different from yours, you have some nerve! It tells you before you read it what the pairing will be! If you don't approve then don't read it and go on living your life! Making a flame about it isn't going to do anything to change the writers opinion. So it's pointless. The only thing the flame with do is cause other people to laugh at you. So if it bothers you make your flame somewhere where it shall be welcomed, because it's definately not welcome here.

Okay i'm done. I just had to vent!

Your stories are just so lovely and well written! I was reading them all day. Well not all day but alot of the day! I'm also glad i stumbled acroos this site. Keep of the great work!

Heiri @ June 07, 2004

Stupid flamers.

That was a very sweet story, and very funny. I loved the last line! Very well written. And, as I say again, I just love this pair!

Em @ June 23, 2004

Another story sweetly written. Ah, what a cute couple. I love how you describe the scared Pip in this one. Love the dialogues.

Really, flamers, this is getting old. I mean, why did you HAVE to read the stories despite the warnings, and why did you HAVE to flame most of the stories on this site? You've got a choice here, read and comment constructively or don't read and get lost!

Btw, maybe some of you didn't notice, (I think someone stated this in another comment, too) Hobbits are NOT human beings. And characters in LotR in general do NOT live in OUR society. So why must those of you who's got homophobia act all funny here? Get over it! When two people love each other, they love each other! It doesn't matter if they're both of the same gender! If two guys loved each other, it's not called "gay", it's called "love".

Clover @ June 27, 2004

Oops, I think I need to clear my comment up.

When I say 'if two guys loved each other, it's not called "gay", it's called "love"' I was referring to when people see a guy and a girl together, people tend to say they're "in love" right? People don't say that the guy and the girl are "het". But usually when it comes to two people of the same gender being together, people tend to say that they're "gay" or they're "lesbian", and I think that's got a negative ring to it. So what I meant to say was, when people are in love, they're in love. It doesn't even matter if they're BEING homo, het, bi, or even transgendered. There, I hope there's less confusion.

With all due respect to the author and fellow reviewers (if I have a reason to respect flamers, I will),

Clover @ June 27, 2004

the only thing I've got to say is if, you're gonna flame, then learn how to SPELL! Please more Merry and Pippin, they're heartbreakingly cute, I heard the BBC radio version 2 years ago and it was obvious that M & P wanted to be together! Loved the Elves' handkerchiefs bit!Encore!Zugabe! More!:)

pippinfan @ July 21, 2004

Very cute!!!

Unknown @ July 23, 2004

Very cute!!!

Unknown @ July 23, 2004

Oh, this was sweet and adorable and in character. Well done.

And ignore the flamers, not that you need my encouragement to do so.

Ruby @ August 04, 2004

While I do not really care for slash, this wasn't a bad story. I think it was wonderfully well written and cute. I believe you did an excellent job. To the flamers, if you can't say somethin nice, don't say nothing at all.

Shelly @ August 31, 2004

I LOVE IT! You have no idea how much you made my day. I left a whole summer's worth of work till this week, and I'm streesing out trying to finish it, and I happened to find this on one of my breaks. Some fics are well written with minor grammatical or spelling errors, but yours was simply flawless. It's short, sweet, rating-appropriate, funny, and just very wonderful. I've liked your works (you do fanart too, right?) for some time, they always provide pleasant distraction from the sludge of schoolwork that I have. Thanks for being a great writer in a fandom full of hideous Mary Sues and confusing smut. If you don't know what I mean by confusing, check out some of the pairings on Gimli and Gandalf? I think not. Anyway, I really should get back to work now. Thanks again!
P.S.: To the other reviewers, don't pay attention to the homophobic purists. They flame because they're bored and have big opinions that are better than everyone else's.

Anna @ September 05, 2004

Holy Jesus! I loved it! =D
Two thumbs up for my bitches.

And to hell with all the hataz

Queen B @ December 15, 2004

- merry and Pip are NOT gay!!
- shut up flamers
- Don't make gay out of Tolkiens charicters!
- Shup Up flamers!
- They are not homosexual!!!!
guys, it annoys me soooo bad!!! Those against gayness should not be so flameish, but those who like gayness don't need to be so angry. "Really, flamers, this is getting old"! Well, really, antiflamers, I can't figure out why you like to critisize the opinions of other people. So what if you think it's wrong or not!!! People will have other opinions from yours. THIS IS WHAT FEEDBACK IS ABOUT!!! You get flamers and the adorers, and you can't have one without the other!! So stop hateing flamers. Thats whats getting old.

Annoyed @ December 19, 2004

I'll repeat what has been said already: thank you so dearly and so much for being an excellent writer in a fandom invaded by Mary-Sues, smut and fluff! Your fics (I'm honest) are the first I come across that can write Merry/Pippin in- character... It's just marvelous! All the other fluff-things tend to make me uncomfortable. Doing good slash is very hard: well, your fics are great!

Concerning Merry and Pippin absolutely not being gay in Tolkien's writings... Considering that the gigantic world of Middle-earth built by Tolkien is based on a certain mythology, and considering that the Lord of the Rings's story represents the myth-of-all-myth in that mythology, and considering at last that in myth, the feelings of characters are, per definition, amplified and magnified... no, they're not "gay", but yes, they love each other to the point of kissing and making love, and yes, fics like this are what I'd call, beautifully, magnificiently in-character, meaning the characters are fit to the concept they represent in the book. Point made.

Saying that fics like this don't represent the book is somewhat pertinent since the LotR fandom is not the best fic-writing one, and, sometimes, flames can remind the authors to keep fit to the characters instead of writing them off just because they want to see this guy kiss this other guy, or girl that he doesn't kiss in the movie (which, since fanfic isn't such a serious art, is still funny). But I think that denying the existence of that potential love between two characters is having a wrong comprehension of them (in the M/P case), not to mention a wrong conception of love.

And well, saying that Tolkien didn't mean for his characters to be "gay", you could also say that his books are based on christian concepts, or again that they refer to a conservative, family-centered lifestyle, and thus that any author not writing fics that bear these terms is "just so wrong" too. Please remember that, keeping fit to Tolkien's vision, at the end, Aragorn took the hand of Arwen and they got married - oh, what a happy couple! If the movies had kept fit to the author's books, Liv Tyler certainly wouldn't have had ANY low-necked dresses either. So, heck - these books were written in the 1940's, don't forget it.

It's not an anti-flamers argument, it's a pro-slash one. *wide grin* Let's say I just wanted to put emphasis on my praise for your M/P fics. Good fics like these show there can be refinement in writing-fanfic, to the point of almost making it an art. Again, thank you lots!

Adnesle @ January 09, 2005

I don't know if I can say anything that hasn't been said already! Well, I can try. =P

Well, I came across your fanfiction on LoM, and then came here to see the rest of what you've got. I've already resolved to look at your SG-1 fanfiction as well. This is the first of your fanfiction that I've come across, and let me just say that I'm a sucker for angst/emotional fics. I've read just about all of your M/P fics (yeah, I'm bad at reviewing. *Shamed.*) and I think that this one's my favorite. Or a close second, but I love this one, either way you look at it.

As for the flamers (yes, I must say something), as has been said, if you don't like, don't read! It's as easy as that. You see slash, that doesn't mean you have to say anything. It exists. You cannot go to every slash writer out there and tell them it's wrong/unethical/out of canon. It's fanfiction, and if an author can at least keep the characters somewhat in character, then they deserve congratulations (congrats, by the way. =P). Slash is not canonical. Neither is most het, unless it's Aragorn/Arwen. Even if you take someone from the books that a character ends up with, you don't see what happens up to that point as far as their relationship goes. So what if they end up with them, it's still not canon if it doesn't happen in the books.

How do you know that they aren't gay, or bisexual? They don't speak of sexual preference at all. And even more to the point, would they even have sexual preferences back in Middle Earth? To me, hobbits seemed a much more open peoples, and I think that if two people were in love, it would be accepted. Is that how everyone thinks? No. Is that how I want everyone to think? No. I don't care what other people think. I'm my own person and they're theirs. I don't care if you think that Merry and Pippin as straight as a ruler, but I do care if you come along, and bother someone else, trying to get them to think as you do, just because they think something different.

So what am I trying to say? Flamers, I'm not angry at you for thinking that Merry and Pippin are straight. You shouldn't be mad at me, or the author, or whoever, for thinking that they could possibly be gay/bi/-in love-, because that is what makes me mad at you. And yes, I stress the 'in love' part up there, because essentially, I believe that who you're in love with doesn't matter, but the fact that you're in love with them does. It doesn't deserve a label.

I, frankly, and quite suprised that there haven't been any flames about them being cousins. I see those all the time in places where I read, and that was one of the biggest concerns when I started thinking of them as together in some way. But that's for a different flame. I, frankly, don't care if they're cousins, and that should bring them closer, if anything.

Oh, dear. I seem to have gotten off on a tangent here. Whoops. Well, I guess that now I've gotten that out I'm quite satisfied. =P Once again, though, I'm glad I came across your fanfiction. You're an excellent writer that seems to be able to keep the characters IN character. I always end up being afraid that I'll totally skewer who the character is and everything, so great job on your part. Keep writing! =D

Robyn @ January 30, 2005

I think this is the sweetest fanfic of Merry and Pippin I ever read. Plus, hobbits are very sweet people.

bubbliscious13 @ February 28, 2005

If you people think that you can come and diss Halroprillalar's fanfic and not write better yourselves then you've got to think about what you're saying!!! You wouln't like it if somebody dissed you when you'd spent hours working on something like this, would you?! Yes, the author makes Merry and Pip appear to be gay, but that's her writing style. It's not right, you people should consider Halroprillalar's feelings...

katie @ May 15, 2005

I just finished all your Merry/Pippin stuff and it's lovely. And the flames you received inspired a bit of parody in my own work so bravo to their stupidity. Thank you for putting forth the effort.

CC @ February 27, 2006

*_* Oh Pippin!
I'LL FEED YOUUUUU *glomps and smothers with apples*
Again, very sweet Merry/Pippin. They're like the....Fred/George of the HP fandom! Just utterly inseperable and totally in sync with one another.
Hmms, I wonder what a mallorn tree looks like....
